Punjab Police on High Alert:

Punjab Police finds itself on high alert as the nation closes Republic Day, with security concerns looming. The decision to deploy a substantial number of personnel reflects a proactive procedure to address potential threats and maintain law and order preemptively. This exhaustive mobilization involves a strategic deployment of forces, with 65 percent allocated across various districts.

Leadership and Responsibility:

To orchestrate this security symphony, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Headquarters Dr Sukhchain Singh Gill has taken the lead, ensuring meticulous planning and execution. The responsibility for the state-level Republic Day programs has been diligently assigned, with Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann set to hoist the national flag in Ludhiana and Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit doing the honors in Patiala.

Strategic Deployment According to District Size:

Acknowledging the diversity in district sizes, the deployment of personnel has been intricately planned. Special Director General of Police (DGP) Law and Order Arpit Shukla, appointed as the nodal officer, oversees the security arrangements. The decision to concern senior officers at various levels reflects a commitment to a robust and well-coordinated security apparatus.

Addressing Recent Threats:

The context of this heightened alert includes recent threats issued by Gurpatwant Singh Pannu, a known terrorist, directed towards Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. The police’s preemptive actions, including arrests of Pannu’s associates in different districts, showcase a proactive stance in ensuring the safety of political leaders and the public.

Inter-State Collaboration for Enhanced Security:

The Punjab Police is not working in isolation; it is in constant communication with police forces from neighboring states—Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan, and Jammu Kashmir. This collaborative effort aims to prevent criminal elements from escaping to other states post-committing crimes. Regular meetings and information exchanges contribute to a synchronized approach.

Security Measures at the Border:

Punjab, sharing a 530-kilometer border with Pakistan, demands special attention. The installation of 2100 cameras in the border area and the deployment of senior officers signify a commitment to fortifying the nation’s boundaries. A committee has been formed to expedite this crucial security infrastructure installation.

Law Enforcement’s Success Against Drug Smuggling:

In addition to national security concerns, Punjab Police has been relentless in its fight against drug smuggling. Inspector General Gill reported 109 cases of drug smuggling in January alone, leading to the arrest of 141 individuals. The crackdown extends to commercial operations, with significant seizures and the confiscation of drug money and assets belonging to smugglers.

Criminal Apprehension and Seizure:

The relentless pursuit of justice is evident in the creation of a list of hiding places for criminals. Continuous searching, special operations, and the deployment of senior officers in border areas underscore the dedication to curbing criminal activities. The recent success in arresting six absconding individuals in NDPS cases and the confiscation of drug smugglers’ assets worth Rs 111 crore exemplify the tangible results of law enforcement efforts.
